Aug. 18 rally in DC to carry message: ‘Government is putting our children up for sale’
A wide coalition of church, veterans and grandparent groups will come together on August 18 to protest and rally
on the Mall in Washington, DC.
Exactly 44 years after Martin Luther King led his historic civil rights rally there, many cooperating groups are leading the Rally to Bring Children and Families Back Together.
“We are rallying to address the fact that our own government has slowly taken away our power as people to maintain our family relationships,” said chairman Rev. Ron Smith of Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Instead of helping
us with the problems we all face, government’s answer has been to take our families apart.”
“Government has put our children up for sale,” he said.
The protest’s main webpage is at
DCRally2007.com.
Building on a network of thousands of black churches, DCRally2007 hopes to bring
many thousands of concerned citizens to the Mall on August 18th.
“We are taking the great civil rights rallies of the past
as our model,” said Stephen Walker, ACFC board member and one of the coordinators of the event. “We’ll collect funds to pay for buses, and bring many busloads in.”
It is also supported by Rolling Thunder a veterans’ group with chapters in every state.
Comments from leaders
Dr. Stephen Walker of ACFC said: “ Dr. King marched for civil rights. The rally on Aug 18th, is a march for 'fundamental rights’ and is a continuation of Dr. King’s vision. When the federal Congress recognizes and protects fundamental rights, families in America will flourish.”
Robert Looper, a retired special forces veteran said, “A
nation which asks its soldiers to lay down their lives at the altar of recognition and respect for fundamental human rights must do no less than what it asks. That is why those who have demonstrated the willingness to make sacrifices of this magnitude support this rally.” Looper is executive director of the National African-American Coalition for
Shared Parenting (NAACSP) in Washington, DC.
“Grandchildren are a grandparent’s reward for raising
their own children, “ said Bessie Hudgins, a senior citizen and grandparent. “If you have grandchildren and divorce comes, your grandchildren can be forced to grow up
without knowing you. That’s unfair to children, parents and grandparents. It’s unfair to society. That is why I
support ‘parental equality’ and why, as a senior citizen and grandparent, I support the rally in Washington DC on
August 18th.” Mrs. Hudgins is president of Three Sides to Every Story, Inc., and director of S-C-O-P-E, Senior Citizens Organization for Parental Equality, and S-U-G-A-R,
Stand up Grandparents and Roar.
Donations for buses “We ask you all to donate for mass transportation whether it be $5.00,
$50.00 or $500,” said Rev. Smith.
“Every contribution will help achieve
our goal of bringing thousands of
people together on August 18, 2007. After your donation, pack your suitcase and board a bus at a location in your hometown and join us all in Washington.”
The rally will address all the forms of government
destruction of families, with a strong focus on government’s fostering of the divorce industry.
According to Rev. Ron Smith, the rally will target every tool that government uses to destroy families. He listed the
following targets of protest. (Quotations are his.) -CPS . “Government has given the Child Protective Service Agency the ability to come into the homes of our nation’s families, take our children and sell them on the adoption stage. Instead of using its funding to assist and repair our nation’s families, they are selling our children to strangers and paying private agencies to do so.”
— Dissolved Marriages. “Government has given our
courts the ability to award our children as if they were prizes to one parent or the other with total disregard for the relationships destroyed with the non-custodial parent and that biological side of the child’s family. This includes Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and Siblings. With virtually no regard to Shared Parenting
one parent in most divorced cases becomes a visitor with their children.
This nation’s family law attorneys have built a thriving business by driving a wedge between
divorcing couples.”
— Child Support Enforcement. “Government has given this agency the power to incarcerate, suspend professional licenses, driving privileges, destroy credit ratings, and criminalize non custodial parents. Instead of assisting parents to reach their obligatory goals, they are punishing parents who may lose a job or become ill or for any reason other than refusal to pay. Parents who are dead broke are not deadbeats.”
— Domestic Violence “Government has given the courts the ability to destroy relationships between parent
and child as soon as allegations are made and prior to a sufficient investigation. While we stand in support of fighting domestic violence, we believe that false allegations should carry sanctions.”
— Friend of the Court (a Michigan agency). “Government has given this agency the power to declare a parent as
abandoning his or her children during the divorce process. Divorcing couples are not abandoning their children, and
the FOC agency should foster an ongoing, parental relationship
between both parents and their offspring.”
— Paternity Fraud – “Government has allowed its state agencies to collect child support from a parent even after DNA testing proves that this particular person is not biologically connected to the child. We encourage these people to maintain a relationship but we protest government taking their money wrongfully.”
Ron Smith: “These are the issues that we who are peacefully protesting want to see changed in the way government does business with this nation’s families. We are protesting to put an end to the destruction of family relationships for profit by these government systems.” |
